FLUIDOS Insights from MECC ’24 Workshop: Advancing the MetaOS Initiative

During the 1st International Workshop on MetaOS for the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum (MECC 2024), held alongside ACM EuroSys 2024 in Athens, Greece, FLUIDOS took a significant step forward with other MetaOS project partners. The workshop titled “Meta Operating Systems for The Edge Continuum: Current Status, Trends, and Challenges” became a critical platform for discussing the current status and the evolution of the six “MetaOS” projects.
Key moments from the workshop included a dynamic panel discussion with leaders from the MetaOS projects AerOS, FLUIDOS, ICOS, NebulOuS, NEMO, and NEPHELE. The discussion centred around shared challenges and opportunities within these projects, highlighting diverse strategies to address common issues and the potential for collaborative advancements.
A notable outcome from the session was the collective decision to initiate a new phase of collaboration. This includes the commitment to jointly author scientific papers on pivotal topics such as the nature of the computing continuum and resource sharing within this framework. This collaborative effort aims to synthesise lessons learned from each project, contributing to a more cohesive understanding and implementation of MetaOS principles across the sector.

The agreed approach which was set forward for the future will be the key to solidifying the ground for diverse uptakes within each project and more effectively disseminate findings to the whole scientific community.
This workshop not only marked a milestone in sharing innovative solutions but also set the stage for a unified approach, a so-called “consolidation phase”, towards a robust, integrated computing continuum, promising a transformative impact on the tech landscape.
